At. 1.1. Tectonics & Structure
The design of a small public structure in an urban context is made pivotal in this design studio. According to its public function its appearance should express the building being open or closed to the public. Guiding this design is a directive design motive which will be developed by the student.
The connection between the structure’s expression in terms of construction and cladding and the necessary structural and technical foundations will be the centre of attention: how can one employ construction and cladding to achieve the intended appearance? During the design process an elementary sense of size will be developed. The coherence of drawing and spatial dimension will be developed in depth, by means of the continuous production of architectural models and drawings. The construction and cladding will be worked out in detail, constantly in relation to the design motive. An important end result will be the mock-up: a building section executed on a one to one scale in the material of choice.
