Design Studio 2.6 - MOMA at the Woonerf

The assignment of the studio is to design a Museum of Modern Art in the typical Dutch housing area built in the 1970s. Students will be asked to explore how the outdated architecture could be given a second chance being engaged with an unexpected programmatic adventure. The assignment of the studio is highly hypothetical.
However, its output should be very precise and practical. The brief will provide a concrete location, background information, program of the museum, and a set of templates for the final presentation drawings. There will be a series of lectures given on curatorial aspects of the museum, as well as on the museum as an urban renewal tool. Students will also analyze the specificities of the woonerf as an urban structure, rethink its architecture and spatial organization, and look for its potential.

Parallel to the studio at the Academy, the similar brief will be run in studios in the Moscow Architectural Institute and the Istanbul Culture University, where the students will be working in the context of similar housing neighborhood built in the same period. The aim is that in the mid part of the term a one week joined workshop is planned in one of the locations. The output of all three studios will become a part of a traveling exhibition in 2011.
