An urban environment where the wind flow is optimized to assure a good ventilation and maintenance. We made a strategy to handle the interference between the urban fabric and wind. We valuated this throug“Wind by ratio. For example, a slow wind from the South east side will get maximum flow support, to be of any value on warm days. The sometimes strong south west wind can be repulsed on street level without any harm for its continuity.
Our aims are:
1. continuity of windflow, on city, district, street and building level.
2. to prevent flow disturbance by wrong chosen architecture or
citylayout.
3. Parametric Guidelines that as sure good wind conditions in a constantly changing city.
4. An architecture and environment layout caused by our guidelines and preconditions.
The location is an old port area. This is still identified by a number of old historic warehouses and storage sheds. Water in the shape of the channels is also very present and karatistiek to the spot.
The location is a fairly open area where the wind is blowing freely. In here water plays an important role. Typicaly there are three main winds. These blow, the most, the loudest ore softest in a year.
The three most common wind directions are the basics for the urban principle. Parallel to this direction, the number of and the size of the openinggs are based on the windconditions. How faster the wind blows, how smaller the openings are and how lower in number. The result is a urban plan based on windcomditions.
Within the building plot, the facade is used as architectural and engineering tool to disturb wind. Functional elements such as balconies, loggias, windows and recessed windows will be used for this principel. Depending on the location of the wall in the building plot and its relation to the wind, with an maxium buidling dept. Where slow wind blows, smooth facades will be, where a strong wind blows, more and larger obstacles are used.
