Chongming has a significant role in the Shanghai metropolitan region for its food production. The pressure on food production is exponentially growing in the whole of China. On the one hand the urban population continues to grow while expanding cities absorb valuable agricultural land, on the other hand the call for sustainable methods of food production intensifies. The agricultural landscape is either in crisis or at the verge of intense modernization. For Chongming to maintain and strengthen its existence as food producer, it will have to modernize. The Chongming Productionscape is an answer to strengthen the position of Chongming as a producer of food for the region, while playing in to the problems of intense urbanization process. To improve Chongmings position as a highly productive landscape feeding the metropolitan area, new efficiency must be found in the physical transformation as well as new distribution network.
