Contemporary architectural discourse is being marked by questions on the condition of architecture’s own knowledge and expertise. Does architecture belong to the crafts, arts or is it a scientific discipline? What does architectural knowledge consist of, and by what means is it past on? The questions stem from a recent past where architectural knowledge has enjoyed less attention than the adjacent disciplines.
During this lecture series we will reflect on the treatises and manifesto’s of mainly the 19th century, like those of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and John Ruskin. Their works are only to be understood in the joining of text and image, of theory and drawing. The knowledge residing in the treatises will be studies on its subject matter and form, as a reflection on the contemporary demand for expertise.
