The district Ayigya in Kumasi is a mixed formal and informal settlement. The informal part of Ayigya is for many people the only chance to survive in the City and for that reason it is a necessity. The growing population in Kumasi and Ayigya is causing an extreme growth of the city . With this growing population in Ayigya it is expected that the informal structures will grow and the compounds will become overcrowded. Especially compared to the facility’s. At a certain moment in that growth there will be an infarction of informal which will destroy the strength of Ayigya.
But Ayigya also has an enormous commercial strength and is located at the highway and train stations between Accra and Kumasi. This well combined with a population growth and commerce, Ayigya can become a very strong sub center. The plan is to create space for commercial growth by redesigning the formal structure including facility’s to attract the commerce. Also the existing housing structure should be redesigned to make a housing career and extreme growth of population possible. This all should prevent an infarction and will make Ayigya a strong social economical district in Kumasi. With a future as a vibrant economical sub-Center with the Corridor as an kathalist for Commercial activity.
